Cutting the Ribbon with Class
“We make no apologies for setting high standards.”
The bar has officially been raised.
The Waterfront, an adult day healthcare center, celebrated a white glove ribbon cutting amidst much pomp and ceremony.
Amongst the attendees were Congressman Kalman Yeger and other influential politicians and celebrity entertainers. An introduction to the new era of senior daycare was an occasion that they were hard-pressed to miss.
The crowds were entranced by the quality of the entertainment and the standards of the event. Shalom Lemer’s sweet voice rang out, Marc Garfinkel’s illusionary tactics enraptured, and the offerings of SoHo Platters were a feast for the eye and an explosion for the palate.
The Waterfront did not disappoint in any aspect.
If the ribbon cutting event is any indication to the facility’s standards, the members in their care are in superior hands.
It was a mere introduction to the caliber of amenities, programs and medical service The Waterfront is offering to their clients.
The Waterfront Stands Out
The Waterfront is a medical model built through insurance. It is unlike any senior program that New York has ever encountered. It’s a facility where only one thing matters:
Standards.

- Horticultural therapy
- Scenic outings
There’s more. A lot more.
Amenity Standards
At a time of life where wellbeing is crucial, the comfort of the seniors should take high priority. The Waterfront anticipates their clients’ needs even before they can articulate them.

Recent Attacks Against Jews Call For Self-defense Measures And New Leadership
By Rabbi Aryeh Spero
Though neo-Nazis, leftist anti-Zionists and Jew-haters within the African-American and Islamic communities often disagree, they are united in their animus towards Jews. There are today powerful forces arrayed against the Jewish people—not simply from the right, but predominately and with greater cultural influence from the political left.
Thus far, those in the establishment have been unable or unwilling to stop the daily harassment of Jews on campus and on New York City streets. Aside from the trauma of what we are witnessing on the streets, many in the Jewish community now rightfully acknowledge that we have a crisis in Jewish organizational leadership. Our major organizations—be it the ADL, the JCRC or many Federations—are failing us.
Furthermore, the loyalty of these cash-laden organizations with liberal/left ideology renders them unwilling to point to and combat the pernicious negativity against Jews coming from members within certain minority groups. Similarly, they are reluctant to condemn unequivocally the anti-Jewish rhetoric coming from groups within the Democrat Party, which is dangerously filtering down across the country and into the streets. That said, we maintain that at this juncture, anti-Semitism has not gripped the American heartland.
In light of this dereliction of duty, a “Jewish Leadership Summit” of experienced activists and grassroots leadership was convened to set forth a set of serious proposals to be discussed by local Jewish communities and individual Jews who want to protect America’s Jewish institutions and people. We can no longer wait. The history of these organizations, as well as the present make-up of their staff and bureaucrats, does not give us confidence. Moreover, it is a valued American tradition for grassroots movements and individuals to energize their sphere when establishment groups have grown tired and pre-occupied elsewhere.
The following recommendations from the summit are intended as a jumping-off point for Jews, as well as our non-Jewish friends, to begin a forceful and honest discussion as to what needs to be done by Jews for self-defense and protection. Consider it a “10-Point Declaration of Action.”
- SELF-DEFENSE AND SELF-RESPECT
Promote the ethic and mitzvah of self-protection. Encourage Jews to be trained in legal self-defense measures, e.g., martial arts such as Krav Maga, boxing, jiu-jitsu, Legion Self-Defense, responsible firearm use and non-lethal weapons such as mace. Promote athletic and strength-building activities to instill a self-confident demeanor.
- INSTITUTIONAL AND SYNAGOGUE PROTECTION
In addition to outside hired security guards, members of congregations should enroll in synagogue protection programs such as “Dr. Bob’s Be Prepared.” These volunteers will be “Synagogue Marshals” trained in the use of firearms.
- NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH PATROLS
Densely populated Jewish neighborhoods should establish patrols or shomrim organizations to constantly do walk-throughs on the streets. While we welcome the help of outside groups, it is incumbent that we bear a responsibility to protect our families. The image of a toughened neighborhood will discourage would-be perpetrators. Rabbis and Jewish educators should encourage such avenues of self-protection. Promote tax credits for community safety patrols and training.
- LEGAL REPRESENTATION
Recruit pro bono lawyers willing to represent Jewish victims of attacks and harassment, as well as those Jews who fought back in self-defense and are now being sued by the perpetrators or prosecuted by government entities.
- COMMONSENSE JUSTICE THAT PROTECTS VICTIMS
Work against dangerous ideas such as “bail reform” and “justice reform” measures that release violent, hate-based criminals back to the streets free to re-attack, and give victims’ and witnesses’ names and contact information to criminals.
- STOP FUNDING ANTI-JEWISH ENTITIES
Do not fund candidates who either are unwilling to explicitly condemn anti-Semitism in and of itself, or candidates who align themselves with radical causes that culminate in anti-Israel and anti-Jewish rhetoric. Stop funding and donating to colleges that allow BDS movements on campus, student organizations steeped specifically in anti-Israel programming, or professors and departments pushing anti-Israel boycotts and maligning supporters of Israel. Stop giving to those Jewish organizations that consistently find fault with and criticize Israel, and elevate and “dialogue” with anti-Israel spokespeople. Do not fund groups or individuals that use incendiary language against Zionism and speak of “white privilege.” This incendiary language ends up fueling attacks against Jewish institutions and individuals, especially in urban neighborhoods.
- HONESTLY IDENTIFY SOURCES OF VIOLENCE
So as to stop violence against Jews, it is crucial to identify those sources even if it comes from minority groups. There is an excess of anti-Jewish and anti-Israel rhetoric coming out of the mosques and madrassas as well as militant segments in the black community. So as to be confronted they must first be exposed. Demands must be made of leaders in those communities to speak against anti-Jewish phraseology and to shun and ostracize those members engaged in it.
- CALL THE ATTACKS WHAT THEY TRULY ARE
These attacks should not be whitewashed simply as a form of hate or intolerance or mental illness. It is specifically Jew-hatred. We cannot assume that those who speak against hate and intolerance are equally against anti-Semitism. Instead of the sanitized term “anti-Semitism” when speaking of attacks we should call it “Jew-hatred.”
- NEW JEWISH LEADERSHIP
The failure of establishment major Jewish organizations to effectively condemn or diminish the anti-Semitism on American campuses, in mosques, in certain minority neighborhoods, and among a host of “progressive” officials is due to their choosing leftwing politics over the needs of the Jewish community. This is a sacrifice that most sane Jews should not be willing to offer. The survival and safety of the Jewish People is the greatest of Jewish goals and values and must override the professed leftwing values that often collide with Jewish survival. Thus, it seems necessary for concerned Jewish citizens to not fully depend on the major Jewish organizations that very likely will malign and sabotage Jewish self-defense efforts that do not conform to the liberal/leftist goals prioritized by establishment organizations. A grassroots movement as well as courageous individual Jews will be needed to fight the battles that may reach our doorsteps.
- PRO-ACTIVELY ENGAGE LOCAL LEADERS
Reach out to local, state, and federal law enforcement, first responders and government officials. Make relationships with local media outlets to ensure that attacks on Jews are accurately and consistently reported. Conversations with neighboring communities should not be done under an attitude of appeasement nor with the sociological guilt that too often dominates what poses as “dialogue.” They should be honest conversations, conducted with self-confidence and with an expectation, without excuse-making, for civil behavior. Excuses for anti-Semitism under a call for “understanding” should not be countenanced. Network with communal and civic organizations, community-based groups, and religious leaders, Jewish and non-Jewish. Respect the customs and culture of the community wherein you live.

Message from Councilman Chaim Deutsch
I’m running as a Democrat because that’s the only way to win in this district that is more than 80% Democratic. I can win, but only with *your* help. Our community must register to vote en masse as Democrats. I know it’s not easy to affiliate yourself with the Democratic Party of today, but please remember that only Democrats can vote in the Democratic primary. If you are registered as a Republican, you are effectively shut out of the most critical race. *If you are a registered Democrat, you can still vote Republican in every general election.*
My opponents in this race are anti-Israel, pro-BDS, and support pro-criminal measures like bail reform. The incumbent Congressmember voted for the Iran deal proudly, and signed onto letters condemning Israel on multiple occasions.
The numbers are there for me to win *if* and only *if* the frum community turns out to vote in the Democratic primary. Please – for the sake of our community’s future – register as a Democrat. Let’s show the city and the country that Southern Brooklyn *can* and *will* elect a conservative member.
Change your party registration here – _the deadline is fast approaching on February 14th_: https://voterreg.dmv.ny.gov/
To support my candidacy (every dollar helps!): https://secure.actblue.com/
There are 1⃣9⃣ days left to change your party registration!

For her children.
For children she hasn’t merited yet, as she yearns to raise progeny of her own.
Or for the children she’s been blessed with, beseeching Hashem that they grow in the way of Torah.
This special prayer, recited every Friday evening across the globe, unite women from across the Jewish world, bringing together mothers and mothers-to-be iy”H in special harmony.

US House Passes Never Again Education Act on International Holocaust Remembrance Day
On International Holocaust Remembrance Day, which commemorates the 75th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the U.S. House of Representatives overwhelmingly passed on Monday the Never Again Education Act, a bill that seeks to expand Holocaust education.
The final tally was 393 to 5, with four Republicans and one Independent, Michigan Rep. Justin Amash, voting against the bill.
If enacted, it would expand the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum’s education programming to teachers nationwide, requiring the museum to develop and disseminate resources to improve awareness and understanding of the Holocaust and its lessons.
The bill heads to the U.S. Senate, whose version slightly differs from the one in the House.
“We have learned over time that it’s not enough to simply condemn these attacks and disgusting actions,” said Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-N.Y.), who co-introduced the bill with Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-N.Y.) last year, at a press conference on Capitol Hill on Monday ahead of the House vote.
“We also need to get to the root causes of the hatred, denial, intolerance that drives these acts,” she continued. “Studies have shown that education is one of the best ways to knock down the lies and the denials and foster mutual understanding and respect.”
Under the House bill, which had 299 co-sponsors – 204 Democrats and 95 Republicans – $2 million would be allocated annually for this year and each of over the next four years to the Holocaust Education Assistance Program Fund, administered by the USHMM’s governing body, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Council. Private donations for the fund would be permitted.
“It’s a start, but it’s an important start,” Maloney told JNS at the press conference when asked how the bill would keep up with the demand in terms of funding for Holocaust education.
The original House version designated the U.S. Department of Education to oversee the program. The Senate version – introduced in July by Sens. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.), Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.), Jacky Rosen (D-Nev.) and Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) – is identical to that. It currently has 28 co-sponsors – 18 Democrats, nine Republicans and one Independent.
“We’re two different bodies,” said Maloney when asked by JNS about the discrepancy.
She explained that “there was some disagreement about how the curriculum should be handled and I just felt that it would be better to move it to the Holocaust museum where it would become the prime focus of that museum to tell the story, to preserve it and to combat anti-Semitism.”
The legislation would create an online Holocaust education repository of resources for educators to teach both middle and high school students about the genocide that killed 11 million people, 6 million of whom were Jews.
Additionally, the House bill would establish a 12-member Holocaust Education Advisory Board to carry out the responsibilities under the bill.
Three of the members would be appointed by the Senate majority leader, three by the House speaker, three by the Senate minority leader and three by the House minority leader. Each member would serve a four-year term with four of the members serving an initial six-year term. Vacancies wouldn’t affect the board’s powers.
Currently, 18 states either encourage or require teaching about the Holocaust.
One third of Americans believe murder of Jews ‘exaggerated’
A survey released last year by the Conference on Jewish Material Claims Against Germany revealed that a third of all Americans believe the scope of the murder of Jews in the Holocaust has been exaggerated.
The data showed that the large swath of Americans believe that just 2 million Jews were murdered during the Holocaust, rather than 6 million.
In addition, 45 percent of Americans could not name any of the 40 ghettos or concentration camps erected by the Nazis, with a whopping 66 percent of millennials being unable to state the significance of “Auschwitz.”
While 93 percent of those polled said they believe students should learn about the Holocaust in schools, 70 percent said people are less concerned about the Holocaust than in the past, and 58 percent said a Holocaust or similar catastrophe could occur again.
“Holocaust can be referred to, for instance, a nuclear Holocaust, a natural disaster Holocaust,” said House Majority Leader Steny Hoyer at the press conference. “But this is a very specific type of Holocaust. And it is hate against a people because of their ethnicity, their religion, their color of skin, some factor that should be irrelevant.”
Less than half of Americans, some 45 percent, know that 6 million Jews perished in the Holocaust, while 29 percent weren’t sure or had no answer, according to a Pew Research Center study released on Wednesday.
However, 69 percent of respondents correctly said that the Holocaust was between the years 1930 and 1950, while 63 percent of respondents correctly defined the Nazi-created ghettos as “parts of town where Jews were forced to live.”
Moreover, 43 percent of participants responded that Adolf Hitler became German chancellor “by Democratic political process,” while 25 percent replied “by violently overthrowing German government.” Another 28 percent saying they didn’t know or had no answer.
According to Pew, “the data suggests that relatively few people in this group express strongly negative feelings toward Jews,” and that “respondents who get more questions right also tend to express warmer feelings toward Jews.”
Maloney had introduced the Never Again Education Act numerous times over the past years, first doing so 20 years ago.
“It’s not easy to pass a bill in the United States Congress,” she said when asked why it took so long for the bill to finally come up for a vote.
“This has been a divisive Congress in many ways. First of all, you have to find the right people to work with you. And I thank Stefanik and [Nebraska Republican Rep. Don] Bacon for coming forward and working so vigorously for it.”
Maloney noted it’s “hard to move” a bill unless “there’s a groundswell of support from the American people.”
She said that after talking about the bill at the Jewish Community Relations Council in her district, where Hadassah CEO Janice Weinman was in attendance and approached the congressman to give her organization’s support on behalf of its 300,000 members nationwide and making the bill a top priority for Hadassah.
‘Legislation addresses a critical need for our country’
Along with Hadassah and the USHMM, other organizations that support the bill include the Anti-Defamation League and the American Jewish Congress.
“This legislation addresses a critical need for our country and an urgent priority for Hadassah,” said Weinman in a statement. “It is imperative that we make every effort to push back against the hatred, bigotry, anti-Semitism and extremism fueling violent attacks – and the best way to do that is by passing the Never Again Education Act.”
“Improving the availability and enhancing the quality of Holocaust education is within our reach. Educators deserve our full support in their efforts to instill its universal and timeless lessons in every generation,” she continued. “The House has spoken clearly and on a bipartisan basis. Now is the time for the U.S. Senate to make the same powerful statement by quickly passing the Never Again Education Act.”
“We are pleased that the House has taken action today, on International Holocaust Remembrance Day, to ensure that the lessons of the Holocaust will be passed from one generation to the next,” ADL CEO Jonathan Greenblatt told JNS. “We look forward to this law’s swift passage and to working closely with teachers and districts across the country to ensure that Holocaust education is uniform and consistent across the country.”
“With anti-Semitism experiencing a sharp resurgence across the nation and the world, it has never been more important for our youth to be educated on how 6 million men, women, and children were brutally murdered against a backdrop of collective silence,” said American Jewish Congress president Jack Rosen in a statement.
“The importance of this act, especially in this 75th year after the Holocaust cannot be overstated,” B’nai B’rith International CEO Daniel Mariaschin told JNS. “Making available the resources to tell the story of the Holocaust to new generations of Americans is absolutely essential to ensuring ‘Never Forget.’”
Rabbi Aryeh Spero, president of Conference of Jewish Affairs, told JNS: “It is a worthwhile attempt to help reduce anti-Semitism, and credit should be given to those who are trying to stem anti-Semitism.”
“I do, however, hope that it speaks directly to and stays focused on what the Holocaust was about: Jew hatred and the destruction of the Jewish people,” he continued. “I hope it does not become so universalized, as we have often seen, that the specific intent of the Holocaust is lost in a general and overarching theme about hate in general or intolerance in general … the Holocaust was designed as the mechanism to specifically erase forever the Jewish People in a Final Solution.”
“We Jews need to feel that Jew hatred is such a potent force that we must focus primarily on the real intention of Hitler and the Holocaust so that this waiting-in-the-wings evil never happens again.”

The Kedusha of Eretz Yisrael is Being Threatened. YOU can protect it!
[COMMUNICATED]
The opportunity only comes around once in five years.
It’s your chance to protect Eretz Yisrael from Liberal movements that are pushing anti-Torah policies and programs.
Right now, The World Zionist Organization (WZO) is electing members of its Congress (the decision-making body of the WZO) and executive board members of the other national Israel organizations. This is a unique opportunity for the American Orthodox community to affect the culture and atmosphere of Eretz Yisrael. Yes, Americans can vote!
152 delegates will be voted in from United States based on YOUR vote. These delegates will be elected to:
- Decide leadership positions in key national Israel organizations
- Create policy affecting, Shmiras Shabbos, Kashrus and tradition at the Kosel
- Set standards of marriage, divorce and conversion
- Decide policy and funding affecting Jewish education in Israel and across the world
- Decide on the direction of the $5 billion budget (over 5 years)
If the Torah community does not vote, we will not be represented. Without our votes, the influence and decisions will be placed in the hands of those who will decide policies that are most often anti-Torah. This is what happened in the last election because we didn’t vote.
Vote TODAY to protect the kedusha of Eretz Yisrael at EretzHaKodesh.org.
In the 2015 election, the Liberal Jewish groups won the majority of American votes. They tried to add a mixed section at the Kosel. They gave money to liberal anti-Torah projects and causes. They launched a program to teach pluralism in Israeli public schools. They welcomed hundreds of thousands of non-halachic “Jewish” Russians as Israeili citizens. And they limited funding to Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria. Now again, they’re gathering tens of thousands of votes to advance their agenda.
There is too much at stake for us to remain silent. Gedolei Yisrael have directed us to act for Torah. Numerous Rabbanim, including HaRav Asher Weiss and HaRav Yitzchok Berkowitz of Yerushalayim, and HaRav Elya Brudny of New York (as reiterated at the recent 2019 Agudath Israel of America National Convention), feel that there is much merit in this endeavor and are encouraging us in our efforts.
To that end, Eretz HaKodesh, an American Initiative to protect and uphold true Torah values in Eretz Yisrael, has put together a slate of delegates that represent the Yeshiva, Chasidic, Sephardic, and Israeli Torah communities of the United States.
Your vote matters! The outcome of the 2020 election is CRITICAL. If Torah representatives are elected to the WZO Congress, they will have an enormous impact on the Torah standards and traditions of Eretz Yisrael.
Voting is only open for 6 weeks, from Tuesday, January 21 – Wednesday, March 11 (Shushan Purim) and costs just $7.50. ($5 under the age of 25.)
Protect the kedusha of Eretz Yisrael! Learn more and vote at EretzHaKodesh.org.
A Community in Tatters, Bravely Pushing Forward
[COMMUNICATED]
The horrific tragedy which took place last month in Greenville, NJ, has left behind a devastated community who is struggling to pick up the pieces. In one senseless act of hatred, two souls were so brutally ripped away from this world. The traumatic episode and the proximity to the innocent children have affected young and old alike.
The residents of Greenville, NJ, have all made the drastic move to live there for one reason only; and that is so they can have a home. Not looking for extravagant standards, but instead settled for the minimum, which is a basic house at an affordable price. A place they can call home without going into debt.
To establish a new Jewish community was going to be tough, but for those willing to sacrifice and take the first step, the future looked bright. Hard work, sweat, and toil were necessary from day one, but in a short while, the positive results became evident. Nowadays, Greenville is a strong community and growing at a steady rate.
However, last month’s shooting has left the community reeling. Although it is an occurrence that could have happened anywhere, for them, it had terrible consequences. The community which does not yet have unshakable foundations has taken an enormous hit and now faces an uphill battle to try to re-establish peace and harmony in their beloved city.
Therefore, they are moving forward with determination by building a new community center that will house the Shul, Mikvah, and Talmud Torah. This will show the world and, more importantly, their community that they are there to stay.
In the next few days, a campaign to help raise funds for the new community center will be live. You can donate by following this link to help Greenville flourish in the face of adversity.
The future of a Jewish community is at a crossroads, and it is in your hands to ensure our success.
